Complete Guide to Ice Skating Locations Around Edmonton

Two kids ice skating on the pond in Hawrelak Park, Edmonton.

Do you go ice skating? I live close to a community skating rink in Edmonton, but it’s always so crowded the kids, who have been on skates since they could walk, can’t build their skills.

Last winter, I took them ice skating on a lake for the first time and their skating ability jumped in the hour we were on the ice. Suddenly, my son was gliding for several seconds instead of shuffling!

I’m planning to explore more ice surfaces this year, and hope to see their skating continue to improve. Maybe I’ll even remember how to do crossovers again!

Getting ready for that, I’ve been researching ice surfaces in the Edmonton area. There are so many options! I’ve mapped and listed them below, along with any amenities (like a skate shack and washrooms).

This land has welcomed First Nations from across Turtle Island, and settlers and visitors from around the world. Alberta lands are part of Treaties 4, 6, 7, 8 and 10, and the homeland of the Métis. Alberta Mamas respects the sovereignty, lands, histories, languages, knowledge systems and cultures of all Indigenous, Métis, and Inuit nations. We are all Treaty people.

Map of Capital Region Ice Surfaces

I’ve chosen to skip outdoor rinks and smaller ice surfaces on this map. They aren’t a “destination” skating location.

You can find a rink close to your home on through you local government’s website or the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues’ database of community league amenities.

Stormwater Ponds

Located in many residential neighborhoods, these lakes are NOT safe to walk or skate on. This holds true no matter what city, town or village you are in.

There is a constant flow of water under the ice surface, which can cause the ice to be thin.
